Liberal Attitudes to the Economy

Liberals believe economic freedom is essential for individual liberty. However, views on the economy differ between classical and modern liberals, especially regarding the role of the state.

Classical Liberalism

Example: The Industrial Revolution was the start of early capitalism. It reflects classical liberal economics. This is because it was a time where the free market flourished with minimal government intervention.

Modern Liberalism

Example: The welfare state, NHS, and progressive taxation in the UK reflect modern liberal economic principles. These can be seen in policies introduced after World War II to reduce inequality.

Summary

Classical liberals favour the free market and reject excessive state intervention. They believe a free market protects liberty. Modern liberals support a free market but with regulation. There must also be state intervention to support welfare policies that ensure there is equality of opportunity.
